Mayor Sam Liccardo & ProspectSV Announce ‘Unleash Your Geek’ Partnership

Program seeks innovators to create solutions for graffiti removal and other urban challenges

San José, Calif. – At the ProspectSV Urbantech Innovation Showcase on June 16, City of San José Mayor Sam Liccardo announced the city’s partnership with ProspectSV for the Unleash Your Geek initiative. The “Unleash Your Geek” series of challenges brings together public and private resources to develop innovative solutions to some of the city’s biggest challenges.

Mayor LiccardoThe first Unleash Your Geek challenge is focused on graffiti removal from overpasses, freeway signs, sound walls, tall buildings and railroad trestles. In phase one, a panel of judges will select as many as four ideas to receive up to $20,000 to prototype their ideas, working in the ProspectSV Technology Demonstration Center.

“Current graffiti removal methods requires Caltrans to shut down the highway late at night, which often adds to the bill,” said San José Mayor Sam Liccardo. “We’re looking for the kind of disruptive technology that this area is so famous for. Today, we might spend $60,000 to clean up graffiti in a hard-to-reach location, but we believe the brilliant minds in our community can reduce that dramatically. Thank you to ProspectSV and Microsoft for your partnership.”

Microsoft and ProspectSV join partners who launched the competition, including the City of San José, Silicon Valley Community Foundation and Caltrans. Microsoft will sponsor ProspectSV Startup Support Services, which will provide the four potential winners of phase 1 with workshop space and consulting services to prototype their ideas. The grand prize winner will receive $5,000, assistance in obtaining a patent and the city as a test partner for the technology.

“The best solutions to pressing urban problems come from collaborative efforts like #UnleashYourGeek,” says Jessica Weare of Microsoft’s Technology and Civic Engagement team. “We’re excited to be part of a team that includes city government, foundations, citizens, and the private sector working together. Even more, we’re eager to see how civic innovators use technology to provide cutting-edge yet low-cost solutions for the city’s graffiti removal efforts.”

The selected teams will utilize the ProspectSV Technology Demonstration Center, which provides lab facilities, a co-working office, high-bay workshop space, shared tools and equipment. Further benefits will include participation in existing events and workshops provided to ProspectSV startup clients.

“To me, Unleash Your Geek is the kind of program that highlights why San Jose would build a Demonstration Center. We’re excited to be a partner, and to host and support the selected teams throughout the program,” said ProspectSV CEO, Doug Davenport.
