Decarbonizing Large Building HVAC
We’ve embarked on the first-ever installation of Flow Environmental Systems’ ANSWR hydronic CO2 heat pump, at the world’s most advanced buildings lab, FlexLab at LBNL. Under this 2 year effort we’ll be installing and testing the ANSWR system under a variety of run scenarios, demonstrating its ability to provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water simultaneously from one system. The CO2 refrigerant application drastically reduces the Global Warming Potential of cooling, providing a major improvement in embodied carbon of the system. Results of the testing will be translated into BIM and Modelica energy modeling, enabling building designers to use them for future building designs. We’ll also be launching an education and training program for HVAC contractors, Mechanical Engineers, building owners, and other important buildings industry stakeholders.
